How to use the site

As a customer

  1. On Rent a Car, choose your dates and passengers, then press Search. Turn on Monthly to book by the month.
  2. Press View More on a car to see its photos, details and rental cost, then press Book now.
  3. Log in if asked, enter the test card and press Confirm booking. Nothing is charged yet.
  4. In My Bookings, press Start Rental when you collect the car from the branch, or Cancel to give it up.
  5. Leave the car at the car park shown on the booking and press Return.
  6. After the inspection, My Bookings shows your final bill.

As an employee

  1. Log out of any customer account, then use Employee login at the bottom of any page.
  2. Car Status shows every car and who is holding it.
  3. Open Inspection to see the cars customers have returned.
  4. If you find damage, press Report Damage and enter a description and cost.
  5. Press Complete Inspection. The final bill is charged and the car can be booked again.
  6. To start again, press Reset Demo Data on Car Status.

Assumptions

  • No server. Bookings are saved in this browser only, so they do not appear on other devices.
  • Availability is per car, not per date. A booking makes the car unavailable for all dates until it is cancelled or the inspection is complete.
  • Collecting and returning. The customer presses Start Rental and Return on My Bookings. There is no staff step and no check of the booking dates.
  • Branches. Each car belongs to one branch. It is collected from that branch and returned to that branch's car park.
  • Payment. Only Visa and Mastercard are accepted. Card details are checked for format only, and only the last 4 digits are kept.
  • Final bill. The rental cost and any damage are charged to the booking card when the inspection is complete, so the customer has no separate payment step.
  • Pricing. Each full 7 days uses the weekly rate and any extra days use the daily rate. A monthly booking counts each month as 30 days.
  • Made-up details. Prices, branches, addresses, car parks and customers are placeholders, and no confirmation email is really sent.
